...or is it me who will be penetrating you?
10th July 2006
David R Williams
I had to pretty much re-learn everything I knew about Illustrator to make the MMORPG segment of this strip. Of course, I knew very little about Illustrator, so it didn't take long to re-learn it. But learning everything I didn't know took a long time.
The whole Illustrator bit is also a lot lighter than I thought it would be, because I haven't installed Illustrator on the desktop yet and had to do it on the laptop, which has wonky colours. That'll teach me, I guess. Unless it doesn't.
The 'Superman' segment -- featuring Mary's favourite one-act play of how she imagines block-headed dunce Lois Lane would react to the two men she loves being separated only by a pair of glasses -- is quite obviously based on - nay, ripped off from - the style of the brilliant Bruce Timm, best known for his work designing the look and feel of the 1990s Batman animated series (the legacy of that series continues in 'The Batman' and 'Justice League', unless they both got cancelled when I wasn't looking.)
It's also my first time inking with a nib-pen instead of a brush: it took me ages, and the lines were a bit of a mess, but it's not noticeable on the finished strip, so in some small way I Win. Take that, PotatoShop webcomic artists! The pen is mightier than the Wacom!
Honourable mention goes to Blambot! for their excellent free comic book fonts: Mighty Zeo has long been my font-of-choice for lettering Shit Happens; today's comic also features the 'Feast Of Flesh' font for Superman's facepalming 'WHOKK!' sound effect. All hail Blambot! Long may they reign!
DAVID'S DVD EASTER EGGS:
Shakra's pose in the penultimate panel is taken from the classic comedy 'The Mummy Returns', after Rick skewers the Scorpion King thanks to his magic spear and some handy-dandy step-by-step pictogram instructions on the wall. With possibly the greatest comic timing in cinematic history, Imhotep dashes in, drops to one knee, and screams 'Noooo!'
When showing someone 'The Mummy' and 'The Mummy Returns' for the first time, make sure this is the first scene they see in order to gain a proper understanding and appreciation of the tone of them.
