Down & Out in the Dead-End Bar
21st July 2006
David R Williams
This is an abject lesson in why you should never give a somewhat fringe character a complicated hairstyle, colouring-wise, when you know full well that character is coming back a lot more in the near future. Kali's hair is now probably the most awkward part of the colouring process, since it involves flat colour, shade, highlight, then a further shade. It's time-consuming, and if I wasn't happy with the results, I'd probably stop doing it.
By the way, that bottom left-hand picture of Kali leaning over and pullin the hair out of her eyes? One of my favourite Kali pictures of all-time. It comes pretty close to capturing some of the turmoil inside this girl, since we're finally seeing some humanity emerge from behind her mask she tries so hard to keep up.
Also a nice script from Mary on this one, despite being scrawled on a series of index cards at midnight while I was uploading the previous comic. It's a nice exchange between the two leading ladies of the strip - and, surprisingly, the first time they've met in the strip - with a different setting than the flat and also enough leeway to let me play around with the pacing and panel layout. I was looking forward to drawing the Dead-End Bar again, since it's been a while since the cast last paid a visit.
DAVID'S DVD EASTER EGGS:
The original plan for this strip was an all-out bare-chested mud-wrestling bout in which the two girls would smack the shit out of each other for the love of Halifax. Then they got off the bus, ah.
