Drinking!
26th February 2007
David R Williams
One of the more visually involving strips this year. Didn't look that way from the script, but it was, and that's no bad thing. One of the joys you can get from drawing comics is the way that you get to take words on a page and make them into a scene that flows and progresses according to how well, or how badly, you adapt it. You can't always tell what a page is going to look like from the script; and with my habit of thumbnailing really really tiny images when fleshing out the layout, I often don't know exactly what it's going to look like until I've pencilled it in. In some cases, it doesn't come together until I've done some Photoshopping on it (what I like to call 'post-production' work) to make it look the way it's supposed to.
The other surprising thing about drawing from Mary's scripts is that she almost always writes scenes completely different than I would have written them, which often means I have a challenge to draw what's on the script. If I write my own scripts, I tend to self-censor based on what I know I'll have to draw, and make it easier for myself before I've laid pencil to paper even once.
DAVID'S DVD EASTER EGGS:
Ginger isn't really passed-out drunk, she's just pretending to be beyond wasted so she'll get carried home and avoid using her legs. The sneaky minx.
