A Whiter Shade of Pale
16th February 2007
David R Williams
It wasn't until I started drawing this strip and decided to actually look up research for once that I realised we don't use 'glass eyes' anymore, per se. What we think of as a glass eye is now essentially a large contact lens that covers the whole surface of where the eyeball would be. And now, the interesting bit: to hold the shape of the socket, and what holds the lens in place, is the replacement ball that is placed into the cavity. To allow blood vessels to grow in and around it and to minimise the chances of the body rejecting it, this is usually a sphere of coral (coral being one of those things you can get implanted without it being spit out by your body, fetish-fact-fans.)
And here I thought up until now Kali's blank eye was just a glass blank she had in there, it turns out it's actually the coral substitute the doctors of Milton Hoight put in there following Rio's excision of her old one. You learn something every day, as the old axiom runs. Today, my children, you have learned what happens after you ignore your mother's advice and end up having someone's eye out.
DAVID'S DVD EASTER EGGS:
The shade of blue on the box is as-close-to-hammers a Tiffany's box -- presumably repurposed by Rio from Holly's collection, or perhaps by some enterprising eye replacement company that wants to hit the upscale end of the market.
