The Awakening of Shakra
6th September 2006
David R Williams
Shakra has somehow chanced on perhaps the most important verses from the Bible, ones that tend to get overlooked by most Christians in favour of being judgemental, hateful, and generally horrible. What's worse is they then use other bits of the Bible to justify this, when this bit spells it out about as clearly and impossible-to-misunderstand as it's ever going to get:
Luke 6:27-36
But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. If someone takes your cloak, do not stop him from taking your tunic. Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. Do to others as you would have them do to you.
If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' love those who love them. And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' do that. And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' lend to 'sinners,' expecting to be repaid in full. But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.
I don't think you have to be a Christian to think that's a pretty good sentiment. I'd quite like it if everyone calling themself a Christian would have those verses printed up on little cards and carry them everywhere, and every so often, take the card out and read it to themselves. There might be a lot less dickheadedness in the world if they did.
(Of course, a lot of atheists could do with learning the same sentiment. Alas, atheists tend to have a pathological hatred of the Bible as a whole, ignoring the bits that actually do carry a decent message, and there's really no standard atheist's reference book, since you really can't rely on anyone paying attention to common sense.
Oh, and are Mary or I Christians? No, we're not. Neither of us have been for many, many years. You can tell because our webcomic doesn't suck.
DAVID'S DVD EASTER EGGS:
Shakra is also unconsciously drawing great influence from Frank Miller's 'Sin City' books, in which the line 'The valkyrie beside me is shouting and laughing' kinda works, and the 'Sin City' movie, in which the line does not work and makes me wish there had been someone involved in that movie who didn't like the comics.
