l'esprit d'escalier, part two
24th April 2006
David R Williams
Ooh, lookit the pretty spiral stairs. Very art deco, aren't they?
I've been trying to pay some more attention to how I draw facial expressions recently, since Mary's kind enough to leave the panel descriptions open enough for me to play around with the art a bit. The art style is a bit variable even within the single strip itself, depending on what effect needs to be created in any given panel.
Plus you'll go mental if you try to draw a whole strip with every panel in ultra-detail. What looks good close up is adding extra detail you wouldn't see in a regular shot, because otherwise the close-up would look very sparse and empty; in contrast, a mid-shot or long-shot has to be toned-down detail-wise or else the face will start to look cluttered and over-complicated.
In addition to not making all faces always look all the same all the time, panel layout is vital. Panel layout adds an extra dimension that makes a static, unchanging layout look retarded and stilted by comparison. Pointing no fingers.
DAVID'S DVD EASTER EGGS:
The shot of the front garden outside the house is actually a separate file created solely for shots from the front door, and full-size is more than four times the dimensions of the actual strip itself.
